In the context of the recent global financial crisis Greece has faced an unprecedented recession with devastating impacts on individuals’ lives echoed in record unemployment and poverty rates. Greek society has collectively responded by providing social support to those in need through the mobilization of social movement organizations, local authorities, different associations, the Orthodox Church etc. The chapter presents the findings of a study applying the quantitative approach of event analysis and based on a community resilience framework explores social support activity including soup kitchens, free distribution of clothes and other basic products, free health care, educational services in a Greek urban society, i.e. Chania. The results unveil the escalating trend in social support actions at the onset of the crisis and their main attributes as important components in building community resilience. The paper focuses specifically on the support activity of social movement organizations as the most active organizing agency during the period under study. It is recommended that future studies in communities severely affected from economic crises could enhance our understanding in social support actions as forms of building community resilience.

Greece in the context of the global economic crisis has experienced the deepest recession in the country’s modern history. The Greek financial turmoil is echoed to record unemployment and poverty rates whereas the life of a broad segment of the population has been drastically undermined. The vicious cycle of Greek recession has trapped both natives and migrants into poverty, whereas the impact on the latter is hardest. In addition, migrants have experienced an escalating intolerance against them as they have been scapegoated for the socio-economic ills of the Greek society. The study adopts a realistic group conflict theoretical framework and uses data from different rounds of the European Social Survey (ESS) to explore migrantrelated attitudes among the native and migrant group between prosperous and recessionary times. The analysis uncovers an upsurge in intolerance against migrants during the economic downturn which is primarily founded in economic threat perceptions. The findings underline that as the Greek economic crisis continues to exacerbate potential tensions between the native and migrant group as well as between the members of the latter threaten the fragile social fabric of the society. Hence, it is highlighted the urgent need to inverse the anti-migrant climate by implementing adequate policies that safeguard the social cohesion.

The recent economic crisis has multifaceted social impacts including the upsurge in anti-immigrant sentiments in the European member-states. Ethnic threat perceptions are considered to be the cornerstone of anti-immigrant sentiments, whereas some scholars underline that economic threat perceptions play a pivotal role in explaining intolerance towards immigrants, specifically during recessionary times. The main rationale of the study is to explore the effects of diverse forms of ethnic threat perceptions on developing anti-immigrant sentiments in Greece which has been tremendously hit by the economic downturn. Using data from the second (2004), fourth (2008) and the fifth (2010) round of the European Social Survey (ESS), the analyses demonstrate that in times of austerity perceived economic threats become more decisive than other forms of threat perceptions in explaining Greeks’ anti-immigrant sentiments.
