Ιn the context of the current crisis in Southern Europe, we can observe theaggressive promotionof neoliberal dogma that imposes extensivestructural restructuring, in the name of reducing public deficit. Under these terms, cities and urban space become privileged terrains forim- plementing neoliberal restructuring in these countries. The promoted urban policies put great emphasis on the privatization of state owned real property, public services and social housing, on the construction of large-scale urban development projects and the adoption of exceptionalitymeasures that overpass existing plans and regulations. The intention of this article is to examine the transformations inurban development processesin Spain and Greece in the context of the cur-rent crisis, by focusing on two large-scale urban development projects: the development of Port Vell (the old Port) in Barcelona and the priva-tization of the former airport of Hellinikon in Athens. An attempt is made to identify commonalities and differentiations between the Spanishand the Greek case, as a way to understand aspects of the multiple manifestations of the dominant neoliberal urban development pattern in thecontext of the current crisis.
