Philosophy and resistance in the crisis
Douzinas’ book can inspire manifold emotions. As it ventures between outright indictment of the late capitalist system following the 2008 global economic crisis and an identification of rays of optimism for a new way of doing things, these emotions are probably conditioned by the time period in which one reads this very engaging and insightful work. Notably, Douzinas moves from an exploration of ideas that were also raised in a Guardian article – aptly titled ‘Is Greece the Eurozone’s Canary in The Coalmine?’(Wachman, 2010) – whereby a bleak future with a return to a Dickensian era of minimal employment rights was forecasted, to a view of Greece as having the potential to become part of a ‘future of Europe’ that will ‘join the age of resistance’ (p. 7)….
